According to a January 19, 2007 article from The Associated Press, a recent survey indicates that many students do not attend their first-choice college. Costs and other factors prompt some students to enroll at their second- or third-level choices, even when they have been accepted for admission by their first choice. The survey, which has been conducted by UCLA's Higher Education Research Institute for the past 40 years, found that nearly one-third of this year's freshmen are not attending the college that was on the top of their list. In addition to costs, geography and athletics were also listed by students as reasons for not attending their first choice.
The article is available at the Chicago Sun-Times Web site.
