According to a January 18, 2007 press release from the U.S. Department of Education (ED), ED's Office of Inspector General (OIG) has released a new DVD entitled "Identity Theft: It's Not Worth It." Available at no charge for schools and student groups, the DVD highlights a case from Reno, Nevada, in which the OIG worked with a community college and several federal organizations to stop a financial aid fraud scam that involved identity theft. The leader of the scam ultimately received a 57-month prison sentence and was ordered to pay over $650,000 in restitution, and others also were sentenced to prison. This is the second DVD produced by OIG - "FSA Identity Theft: We Need Your Help" was released in 2003.
The press release is available at ED's Web site.
