Shorthand Used For Instant Messaging Spills Over Into Student Assignments
12/29/2006

A December 25, 2006 article from The Washington Post reports that students are increasingly incorporating instant message (IM) shorthand into their assignments. Because there are often space limitations associated with electronic text messaging, users have developed their own particular shorthand that allows them to say more with less characters (for example, "b4" is used in place of the word "before"). Many students, especially those in high school and college, send several IMs each day. Consequently, the shorthand has become so second-nature to them that they may not even realize they are using it. Educators, fearful that students will continue this habit even after they've entered the workforce, are discouraging the use of IM shorthand in formal writing.

The article is available at the Web site of The Washington Post.
