According to a December 7, 2006 article from The Associated Press, more students who qualify are utilizing the federal breakfast program. Although less than half of the low-income students who need it are participating, the program fed a record 7.7 million children during the 2005-06 academic year. Because students are better able to concentrate and learn when they are not hungry, school officials across the country are encouraging families who qualify to participate. The program, which is run by the U.S. Agriculture Department, reimburses schools for the free or reduced-price breakfasts and lunches it provides to students from low-income households.
