A November 3, 2006 article from the Chicago Sun-Times reports that the federal government is providing a $27.5 million grant to assist public schools in Chicago as they implement a new teacher incentive program. The goal of the program is to obtain high quality teachers at the 40 lowest-scoring public schools in Chicago. The five-year plan begins with the 2007-08 school year, and provides financial incentives to teachers (and other school employees) when students demonstrate significant progress. Chicago is the largest U.S. school district to introduce merit pay for teachers.
