According to a September 25, 2006 article from The Associated Press, the U.S. Homeland Security Department will provide $5 million dollars to ensure that all public schools have warning radios that automatically announce impending hazards (including severe weather, terrorism, and child abductions). The radios pick up signals from the 950 short-wave radio stations that are operated by The National Weather Service, which is part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Distribution is expected to begin during the month of October, and it will likely take several months for all of the country's 97,000 public schools to receive their radios.
