According to a September 17, 2006 article from USA Today, a recent survey shows that high school students have a wide range of opinions regarding the rights guaranteed by the First Amendment. While nearly half (45%) of students surveyed believe that the First Amendment guarantees too many rights, responses regarding specific press and speech freedoms were nearly identical to results from a similar 2004 survey. Almost three-fourths (72%) of participating students indicated they have taken a class that studied the First Amendment. More than 14,000 students, representing 34 high schools, participated in the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation survey.
