An article from the August 21-28, 2006 issue of Newsweek provides an admission dean's insight into how students should approach essays that accompany their admission applications. Essays should reflect the applicant's personality, and help the admission officer make sense of the statistics and other facts that appear elsewhere in the application packet. Because admission staff review so many essays, the applicant wants to catch their attention without being over the top. In the big picture, minor errors may be less costly to the applicant than a bland essay.
