College Freshmen Spending More Money on Dorm Room Decor
8/4/2006

An August 4, 2006 article from USA Today reports that families of college students, especially freshmen, are spending more than ever on items for their dorm (residence hall) rooms. Being away from home and family for the first time in their life, college freshmen often use dorm room decor to create a familiar environment while expressing their unique personality. According to 2005 data, college freshmen spend an average of $1,200 on total back-to-school shopping - the majority of which ($728) is spent on electronics and computers, followed by $344 for dorm decor. Retailers have picked up on this trend, and are targeting college students and their families for back-to-school sales. The article also includes a link to ten tips for saving money on back-to-school shopping.

The article is available at the USA Today Web site.
