A July 9, 2006 article from The Associated Press reports that, across the nation, many colleges are relying more on cell phones than land lines to communicate with students. The degree to which cell phones are utilized varies: some colleges simply make cell phone service available to their study body, while others require that all students have cell phones with Global Positioning System (GPS) technology. The GPS function can be used as a safety device, to allow authorities to track a student who might be lost or feel threatened. In many instances, colleges are keeping limited land line service in the residence halls, for use during emergencies.
