School Buses Expose Students to Pollution

Children in most states in the nation are being exposed to pollution from school buses, according to a study by an environmental advocacy group. Emissions from the diesel fuel used by buses can contribute to asthma and other respiratory ailments, and few states received high marks when graded on rates of pollution per bus last year. Although the Union of Concerned Scientists recommends that the nation's buses be refitted with anti-pollution equipment from the current diesel power, in the meantime, they have a "considerably more low-tech method" to reduce our children's exposure to soot from diesel exhaust: turn off the engines whenever possible.
