A May 31, 2006 article from The Associated Press reports that, for the first time in its history, the finale of the Scripps National Spelling Bee will be televised live during network prime-time (on Thursday, June 1st, from 7 - 9 p.m. CT, on ABC). Participants are ages 9 through 15, ranging from the fourth to eighth grades. Bonny Jain of Moline (Illinois), the 12-year-old winner of this year's National Geographic Bee, is among the spellers in the Scripps competition.
