Guidelines Announced for Federal Academic Competitiveness and National SMART Grants

A May 2, 2006 press release from the U.S. Department of Education (ED) provides guidelines for current college students and high school seniors to apply for new Academic Competitiveness Grants and National SMART Grants for the 2006-07 academic year. Students completing rigorous coursework in high school or pursuing degrees in math, science and critical foreign languages will be considered for these new federal grants.The press release provides details regarding what qualifies as "rigorous coursework," as well as a corresponding fact sheet and information on how states can submit their rigorous secondary school programs of study for recognition by the Secretary of Education.
