An April 11, 2006 article from The Associated Press reports that, across the nation, schools are struggling to find an appropriate balance between teaching academics and promoting healthy lifestyles. Responding to increased emphasis on academic performance, many schools significantly decreased the amount of time and resources devote to physical education and sports. Now, seeing that the student population is facing an obesity problem, experts are debating whether more physical activity should be required during the school day. Currently, Illinois is the only state that requires daily physical education from kindergarten through high school.
