According to an April 12, 2006 article from USA Today, young people in today's society are less concerned with conforming to social norms than were their peers from years ago. From 1958 through 2001, more than 40,000 young adults, adolescents, and children were surveyed regarding the degree to which they seek social approval and try to follow society's standards. Those surveyed in 2001 were significantly less likely to heed social norms than were participants from the earlier years of the survey. Social conventions such as dressing appropriately, saying "please" and "thank you," and being sensitive to the feelings of others were among topics covered by the survey.
