An April 2, 2006 article from the Journal Gazette & Times-Courier (Coles County, Illinois) spotlights classrooms in east-central Illinois where, along with math and reading, students are taught the importance of using manners when interacting with others. Complimenting new clothing, helping retrieve dropped papers, and showing support to a classmate with new glasses are all aspects of character education that are being shared with students. The purpose of teaching manners during the school day is to supplement, not replace, similar life skills that students should be learning from their families. Because children often imitate what they observe, educators encourage parents to set an example by fostering good manners in the home.
