Each year the Central Processing System (CPS) creates a Renewal Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for students who are eligible to participate in the renewal application process. The Renewal FAFSA process is a tremendous time-saver for students because most of the information they provided on their prior-year application is carried forward and displayed on their Renewal FAFSA. Students need only answer certain income and asset questions and update other information if it has changed from the previous year.
What’s New in 2006-07?
Several major changes were made to modernize the 2006-07 Renewal Application Process. More detailed information about the changes to the renewal application process can be found in the 2006-07 Renewal FAFSA Process Guide.
- All renewal-eligible student applicants must use the Web to reapply. The paper Renewal FAFASA will no longer be printed and mailed during the 2006-07 academic year. Students can reapply using their PIN to complete, sign and submit a 2006-07 Renewal FAFSA online via Renewal FAFSA on the Web (FOTW).
- Renewal Reminder e-mail and/or letter replaces the tri-fold PIN Mailer that was sent to students in the past.
- Two Renewal Reminder Notices will be sent to students. The first notice will be sent during November and December to all renewal-eligible applicants. Students with a valid e-mail address will receive an e-mail reminder. If e-mail is undeliverable or a valid e-mail address was not reported on their 2005-06 FAFSA, reminder letters will be sent.
- A follow-up Renewal Reminder Notice will be sent in February to all renewal-eligible students who have not yet reapplied with the 2006-07 FAFSA.
- In addition to income fields, certain fields no longer pre-populated:
Asset net worth;
- Household size:
- Number in College, and
- Six Federal School Codes and associated Housing codes.
Pop-up reminders will display asking students to verify or update their mailing address and e-mail address on FOTW.
