Student Preparation May Not Match College Aspirations

An October 10, 2005 article from Inside Higher Ed reports that many high school students who plan to attend college may not have the math skills they will need to succeed. According to the results of a recent survey conducted by the federal government, only about half of students who expected to pursue a graduate or professional degree had a grasp of intermediate-level math skills. For those hoping to earn a four-year degree, approximately one-third were unable to perform simple problem solving that required a mastery of low-level math concepts. The article includes a comparison of college expectations (based on gender, race, and family background), a table of factors cited as important by students when selecting a college, and a link to the survey from the federal government.
