Kindergarteners Face Longer Days
10/4/2005

An October 3, 2005 article from CBS News reports that Los Angeles kindergarteners now have full, rather than half, days of school. Across the country, some schools are making similar changes in order to have more time to teach young children the basic skills needed to increase test scores. A debate exists among educators regarding whether too much emphasis is being placed on teaching kindergarteners how to read and write. Some teachers fear that placing high academic expectations on kindergarteners will create a stressful environment, which could actually make it more difficult for students to learn.

The article is available at the CBS News Web site.
