According to a September 13, 2005 article from The Associated Press, U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings indicated in a recent interview that at least 372,000 students have been displaced by Hurricane Katrina. More than 700 schools in Louisiana and Mississippi have been forced to close due to the hurricane and its aftermath, with some of those schools being completely destroyed. Secretary Spellings is working with the White House and Congress to determine what portion of the costs associated with rebuilding schools and serving displaced students will be covered by the federal government. Also being considered is the extent to which federal education laws, including No Child Left Behind, can be waived to assist school districts as they strive to regain functionality.
