Illinois Public Schools Open to Children Displaced by Hurricane Katrina
9/2/2005

A press release dated September 1, 2005 announces that Governor Blagojevich has ordered Illinois public schools to waive residency requirements and enroll any child who has relocated to Illinois due to being displaced by Hurricane Katrina. For enrollment purposes, displaced children will be considered homeless and will be enrolled by local school districts. To facilitate immediate enrollment, immunization requirements will also be temporarily waived by the Illinois State Board of Education and the Illinois Department of Public Health. In addition, Governor Blagojevich has announced that Illinois' Community College system will accept students from Illinois who attend college in the Gulf States and are seeking a place to continue their education.

The press release is available at the State of Illinois Web site.
