ACT Scores for Illinois Students Unchanged, Lag Behind Other States
8/19/2005

Data recently released from ACT on the college entrance exams taken by Illinois students last spring shows no improvement in overall test scores from the previous year. Only slight improvements were shown in English and science, with no change at all in math scores from 2004, and reading scores actually declined. Overall, Illinois students' scores are just below the national composite score.

Legislation currently awaiting the governor's signature would seek to improve preparedness for college by instituting more rigorous high school graduation requirements. According to the governor's education advisor, "the expectation is that when students get the courses required under the governor's plan, the state will show meaningful improvement."
