Testing the 'Internet IQ' of College Students
7/19/2005

A July 15, 2005 article from The Associated Press reports that some college students do not know how to identify reliable, verifiable sources of information on the Internet. College professors fear that, for many students, anything that appears as the result of an online search engine query is considered a good source. Students' inability to distinguish between valid and unreliable online sources may be caused, in part, by the fact that many professors do not have time to incorporate Internet research procedures into an already full course syllabus. In an effort to address this issue, several colleges are working with the Educational Testing Service (ETS) to develop a test that will measure a student's "Internet IQ." A preliminary version of the tool is being tested in California, and the actual resource is anticipated to be available for students to take on a voluntary basis next year.

The article is available at the MSNBC Web site.
