A July 12, 2005 article from Inside Higher Ed reports that plans are being made to build a "global partnership" of research universities, starting in January 2006. To date, eight universities from around the world - including the University of California at Berkeley and Yale University in the United States - plan to be part of the cooperative venture. Specific details, such as the degree to which each participating institution will be involved, have yet to be determined. Possible benefits for those in the alliance include student exchanges, faculty collaboration and exchanges, research training cooperation, and shared best practices and protocols.
