Some Students Find 'Gap Year' Beneficial
7/13/2005

A July 11, 2005 article from The Associated Press discusses how some students are choosing to take one "gap year" between graduating from high school and attending college. Several college admissions officers support the idea, as long as the time is not wasted - if put to constructive use, the extra year can allow students to arrive on college campuses more focused and self-confident. While the concept is fairly popular in other countries, such as the United Kingdom, the number of American students opting to take "gap years" has not increased significantly in recent years. Some students who do wait the extra year before attending college still apply for admission as high school seniors, and then defer their admission until the following fall. Others, hoping that their life experiences during the year will make them more competitive, postpone submitting their applications for a year.

The article is available at the CNN.com Web site.
