According to a June 23, 2005 Associated Press article, recent analysis shows that the actual high school graduation rates for many states are lower than what have been reported. Based on figures provided by the U.S. Department of Education (ED), 36 states reported that between 80% and 97% of their high school students graduate on time. However, according to a series of independent analyses, most states are closer to a 70% graduation rate. Currently, each state can calculate its own graduation rate using whatever method it chooses, which makes it difficult to compare numbers from one state to another. Plans are being made for the Council of Chief State School Officers to assist states in developing a common system to collect and report data.
