Avoiding Student 'Brain Drain' Over Summer Break
6/17/2005

A June 16, 2005 article at the NBC5.com (Chicago) Web site offers tips to prevent students from losing recently-acquired knowledge and skills over the summer break. A study from the U.S. Department of Education indicates that students lose approximately one-fourth of their reading and math skills during vacation. Parents can prevent this from occurring with their children by helping them choose summer activities that are both academically challenging and fun. Academic camps and summer reading programs are examples of how children can keep their minds active during summer vacation. Experts indicate that the key to success is allowing students to relax and enjoy themselves while learning.

The article is available at the NBC5.com Web site.
