According to an Associated Press article dated June 10, 2005, a recent government report discusses the benefits for students who participate in the Head Start program. According to the report, Head Start - which is designed to assist low-income children prepare for kindergarten - has helped to narrow the reading skills gap between disadvantaged children and other preschoolers. The report indicates that similar benefits were not found for math skills, or for children's comprehension of what is said to them. Nationally, there are over 900,000 low-income children enrolled in Head Start, and each year the program spends approximately $6.7 billion to assist participants.
