While the article focuses on occurrences at Ohio and Michigan schools, it acknowledges that colleges across the country are doing what they can to decrease the risk of confidential data being accessed illegally. Computer hackers may target college computer systems because of the large amount of Social Security numbers and other types of personal information they contain. In many cases, colleges are taking steps to limit the use of Social Security numbers as student identifiers, except in those instances where the Social Security number is required for participation in federal programs (for example, to apply for federal financial aid).
