According to an article posted at the NBC5.com (Chicago) Web site, school days that start too early can have a negative impact on academic performance for high school students. A study published in the June issue of the journal Pediatrics indicates that early starts to the school day may cause sleep deprivation in teenagers. Adolescent circadian rhythms, or changes in the sleep-wake cycle, cause adolescents to require more hours of sleep than are needed at other ages. The study, which examined the sleeping habits of seniors at Evanston Township High School (Evanston, Illinois) involved researchers at the Feinberg School of Medicine and the Center for Sleep and Circadian Biology at Northwestern University.
