A May 4, 2005 news release announces a recent report that examines the role private scholarships play in providing college access in the United States. Private Scholarships Count: Access to Higher Education and the Critical Role of the Private Sector represents a collaboration of the Institute for Higher Education Policy (IHEP) with Scholarship America and the National Scholarship Providers Association, with the support of Lumina Foundation for Education. The Private Scholarships Count report includes information from private scholarship providers, as well as data from the U.S. Department of Education's National Postsecondary Student Aid Study. One of the characteristics of private scholarships that makes them unique is that they can focus on helping students at the local level. According to the report, college students receive over $3 billion each year in private scholarships.
