Teacher Group Analyzes Writing Components for Standardized Tests
5/5/2005

According to a May 4, 2005 article from Inside Higher Ed, the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) recently released an analysis of the writing components that are now mandatory for SAT and optional for ACT standardized exams. According to the NCTE analysis, the writing portion of these exams does not accurately measure what a student's writing abilities will be in college. The group also expresses concerns that, rather than concentrating on comprehensive and fundamental writing skills, high schools will feel pressure to coach students on how to write specifically for the time-limited essay portion of the standardized tests. The article shares responses to the NCTE analysis from both SAT and ACT representatives.

The article is available at the Inside Higher Ed Web site.
