An Associated Press article dated April 25, 2005 reports that the Supreme Court will consider whether Social Security payments may be seized by the government in order to recover unpaid student loan debts when those debts are over 10 years old. Justices will hear the appeal of a man about whom the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals (San Francisco) ruled that the U.S. Department of Education (ED) may seize Social Security payments. As part of his appeal, the individual states that he needs the money from Social Security to pay for living expenses, such as food and medicine. The case will be heard in October, when the Supreme Court's next term begins.
