According to a March 6, 2005 article from the Chicago Sun-Times, more students are opting to first attend a community college and then later transfer to a four-year college or university. The article indicates that, statewide, nearly one quarter of all community college students are between the ages of 17 and 20. Rather than going directly from high school to a four-year institution, these students complete their first two years of school at a local community college (where tuition is likely less expensive, and they may be able to live at home), and then finish their degrees elsewhere.
The article is available at the Chicago Sun-Times Web site.
