According to an Associated Press article dated March 3, 2005, the number of schools across the United States that are utilizing distance learning technology is steadily growing. The primary benefit for schools is that, with distance learning, they can significantly increase the options available to students. School districts in rural areas, in particular, are taking advantage of this technology. Nationwide, over 35% of U.S. public school districts had students taking classes via distance education during the 2002-03 academic year. While the majority of participants were in high school, the numbers also include middle school and elementary school students. Already popular in postsecondary education, college level enrollment in distance education courses nearly doubled between 1995 and 2001. More than half of all American two-year and four-year colleges offer courses via distance learning.
