Student Opinions on Freedom of the Press
1/31/2005

According to a January 30, 2005 USA Today article, a recent survey shows approximately one-third of high school students in the United States believe that freedom of the press should be more restricted. Slightly more (36%) think that newspapers should get approval from the government prior to publishing articles. The survey, commissioned by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, questioned high school students, principals, and teachers regarding First Amendment rights. Some educators believe the survey results indicate that students should receive more education regarding the First Amendment (which guarantees freedom of speech, press, and religion) and the rest of the Constitution of the United States.

The article is available at the USA Today Web site.
