Schools Placing Less Emphasis on Social Studies
1/25/2005

An Associated Press article dated January 24, 2005, addresses the fact that, in order to concentrate on requirements of the federal No Child Left Behind Act, many Illinois schools are devoting less time specifically to social studies. Because the No Child Left Behind Act focuses on improving student performance in math and language arts, schools are utilizing the majority of their resources in these areas. In an effort to ensure that students still learn about social studies and other subjects, some teachers are incorporating these topics into reading and writing assignments. For example, the teacher of a bilingual class in the Chicago suburbs recently had students complete a timeline of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s life to practice writing in English.

The article is available at the Chicago Sun-Times Web site.
