A January 16, 2005 article from The Washington Post reports that, in preparation for the revised exam that will be used starting in March, scorers of the SAT standardized assessment exam are reviewing how they will score written essays. The article includes information from a reporter who was allowed to observe a pilot scoring session. Because the essays must be written in a short period of time, scorers will be concentrating more on the writer's ability to develop a logical chain of reasoning than on technical writing mechanics. Rather than analyzing each essay for grammar and spelling, scorers will be reading the essays to get an overall impression of the thoughts being conveyed. While those who oppose the new essay component of the exam are concerned that students will not have time to review and rewrite, those in favor of the change think it will give college admission officers a good idea of how well an applicant can write under pressure.
