An Associated Press article dated December 30, 2004 discusses the current shortage of school speech-language pathologists in the United States. Projections indicate that, by the year 2012, approximately 120,000 speech-language pathologists will be needed to meet the need in America's schools. Improved diagnostic tools have resulted in more students being identified as needing the assistance of a speech-language pathologist. Because most states require a master's degree in order to be fully certified, the process of becoming a speech-language pathologist can be a lengthy one.
