Parental Unemployment May Impact Students' Behavior and Academic Performance
11/13/2009

According to a November 11, 2009 article from The New York Times, the unemployment of one or both parents can have a significant impact on the family, including children's behavior and performance in school. Children may pick up on parental tension regarding finances, or see their parents arguing more than usual - as a result, the child may start to exhibit signs of anxiety and have a more difficult time concentrating on schoolwork. While some parents try to view the experience as an opportunity to spend more time together as a family and teach their children the value of thrift, may families struggle with the detrimental effects of unemployment.

The article is available at the Web site of The New York Times.
