'National Survey of Student Engagement' Helps Colleges Assess and Improve Learning
11/12/2009

According to a November 9, 2009 USA Today article, results from the latest National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE, often referred to as "nessie") may be used by colleges to assess and improve student learning. Because research indicates that students who actively participate in their education (for example, interacting with professors and classmates, or utilizing campus services) tend to learn more, NSSE data can be very valuable to educators. The five key aspects of a student's college experience that are measured by the NSSE include: level of academic challenge; active and collaborative learning; student/faculty interaction; supportive campus environment; and enriching educational experiences. Over the past decade, more than 2.4 million students have participated in the survey, representing almost 1,400 four-year colleges and universities.

The article is available at the USA Today Web site.
