According to an August 26, 2009 USA Today article, an increasing number of cash-strapped school districts across the country are cutting back on school bus routes. Recent data from the American Association of School Administrators indicates that nearly one-quarter of surveyed school districts plan to reduce or eliminate school transportation for the 2009-10 school year (which is a 14% increase from 2008-09). The potential impact of this cost-savings measure includes the need for parents to alter their work schedules to accommodate taking their children to and from school, an increase in student absences, and more students having to cross busy roads in order to walk or ride their bicycles to school.
