An August 20, 2009 Chicago Tribune article reports that, in an effort to avoid residence hall conflicts, some colleges are utilizing online technology when making roommate assignments. These colleges set up their own social networking sites, then invite students to create profiles and use the posted information to choose their roommates. Students at colleges that do not offer such options are instead using public sites (like Facebook and MySpace) to learn about their assigned roommates - and, in some instances, college administrators receive complaints and requests for room changes before classes even begin in the fall. Administrators are faced with the challenge of trying to accommodate individual requests while still fostering an environment where students learn how to get along with people who may have different interests and backgrounds.
