An August 18, 2009 article from The State Journal-Register reports that Springfield is one of ten cities nationwide to be awarded grant money to help ease a nursing shortage. The two-year grant (which includes $250,000 from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Northwest Health Foundation, and $295,000 in local matching grants) will be used to help colleges in the Springfield area develop nursing classes on weekends and evenings, an accelerated bachelor's program in nursing, and a master's program for nursing-school faculty. The overall goal of the grant program is to fill an estimated 100 nursing jobs that remain open in the Springfield area each year.
