According to an August 3, 2009 Newsweek article, college administrators across the country are making plans to address the possibility of an H1N1 virus outbreak on their campuses during the upcoming academic year. Because college students often live in congested settings and may be particularly susceptible to the virus, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have included 19- to 24-year-olds in the first-priority category for when an H1N1 vaccine becomes available (anticipated for mid-October). Many colleges are developing emergency plans that would be followed in the event of a campus-wide virus outbreak, including such measures as increasing the number of beds in the campus infirmary and isolating potentially infected students. Some colleges may offer distance learning options to accommodate sick students who have returned home to recuperate, and are also encouraging possibly-infected students to not return to campus until they have fully recovered.
