According to a June 23, 2009 USA Today article, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan is announcing proposed changes to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) that, if approved by Congress and signed into law, would seek to simplify the process of applying for college aid. Included in the proposed changes are the possible elimination of some existing questions, the ability for applicants to skip questions that are not relevant to them, and the use of income information that families have already provided to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Depending on an applicant's situation, the current FAFSA requires responses for up to 153 questions. A major goal of the proposed changes would be to encourage more low- and middle-income college students to complete the application process.
