According to a June 17, 2009 article from The New York Times, the top three military academies in the U.S. report a significant increase in the number of applications received for the class of 2013. Compared to applications for the class of 2012, applications have increased by 40% at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, 9.6% at the Military Academy at West Point, and nearly 10% at the Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs. In addition to a slow job market and financial concerns, officials indicate other factors - such as patriotism or the desire to follow in a parent's footsteps - may be contributing to the volume of applications received. Intensified marketing campaigns for the academies may also have impacted this year's pool of applicants.
