According to a June 9, 2009 USA Today article, extended school time is becoming more popular across the nation. Whether adding hours onto the school day, or making the school year longer, research shows that approximately 1,000 schools (the majority being charter schools) have expanded their schedules. Proponents of extended school time believe that the longer schedules result in academic improvement for students. A potential drawback to expanded schedules is the possibility of fatigue and burnout among teachers and administrators.
