According to a June 4, 2009 article from The Associated Press, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has raised concerns regarding whether playgrounds and athletic fields that are made from recycled, ground-up tires may be harmful to the health of children. EPA scientists have indicated that recent research shows pieces of shredded tires might contain hazardous substances, such as carcinogens and other chemicals. Based on this information, the EPA is conducting additional studies and anticipates releasing its findings in the next several weeks. The "fake surface" playgrounds have grown popular in recent years because they are believed to be easier on bones, while providing a new use for discarded tires that would otherwise sit in landfills.
