A June 1, 2009 press release from the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) announces that, as part of the "Common Core State Standards Initiative," Illinois joins 48 other states and U.S. territories in developing common English and math learning standards for elementary and secondary students. The initiative, which will be jointly led by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), seeks to utilize the best evidence, research and academic performance of countries around the world to create a common core of learning standards.
